Pain Management After Amputation
Pain following amputation is common and can significantly affect mobility, prosthetic use, sleep, and overall wellbeing. At Connect Physio, we provide specialist, evidence-based physiotherapy to help reduce pain, improve comfort, and support a confident return to daily life.
Understanding Post-Amputation Pain
Pain after limb loss may include phantom limb pain, residual limb pain, nerve-related pain, or musculoskeletal discomfort caused by altered movement and posture. These symptoms can arise from nerve sensitivity, scar tissue, muscle tension, prosthetic pressures, or changes in how the brain processes sensation.
Identifying the underlying contributors allows our physiotherapists to develop a targeted and effective management plan.
Our Approach to Pain Management
Connect Physio uses non-pharmacological, evidence-informed techniques tailored specifically for amputee and prosthetic rehabilitation.
Treatment may include:
Targeted exercise therapy and movement retraining to reduce strain and improve function
Graded Motor Imagery, including mirror therapy, to address phantom limb pain and altered body perception
Desensitisation techniques to reduce sensitivity and improve tolerance to prosthetic wear
Manual therapy and soft tissue techniques to ease muscle tension and scar restriction
Acupuncture to calm the nervous system and reduce pain and hypersensitivity
Education on pain mechanisms, posture, daily habits, and flare-up management
By combining physical treatment with education and reassurance, we aim to restore comfort, confidence, and control – supporting long-term outcomes and improved quality of life.
